Hey guys, i'm in desperate need to get rid of some of the annoying noise in my podcasts. Right now i'm using my mic going directly into my Powerbook, so the gain sucks cuz there's no external box and i have to artificially adjust the gain. i'm wanting to get rid of the noise due to this.
i currently use audio hijack pro and logic express 7 if you guys can help out!
i'm up for both plugins and ideas!

Turn off your microphone.
Ok, seriously, anything annoying other than my own voice is removed with a noise reduction feature in Cool Edit Pro. I know it's available in Audacity as well. The other thing you can and SHOULD do is put a Noise Gate / Compressor / Limiter in-line before you go into your computer. That is the RIGHT way to do it.

well the big thing is that i get a mixer to boost the gain outside of the computer...that for sure will improve the quality for sure!

the one built into Audacity works okay. Just make sure you get a real clean spot for it to learn from.

In general, your always better off doing as much as you can before the recording to get rid of any background noise (we've talked about this in previous threads). If you absolutely can't get any more reduction and it's still bad, noise reduction software is usually the last choice of audio engineers (because it's ok, not great - it always ends up in a compromise of some kind).
General application tips 1) as said previously - have enough 'blank' time to train the noise reducer on and 2) don't count on reducing all your noise - it will usually sound really bad - try removing 50% of so max... it's easy to lose sight of but your goal with noise reduction software is to reduce noise a bit (lol) not eliminate it.

Ahhhh, it all makes sense now. I never really invested the time to figure out the noice reducer, but now that I know I think that could be very useful.
Thanks!

Noise Gate / Compressor / Limiter
What about a Mic/Voice processor? Is getting just a gate/compressor/limiter a better option than a mic processor (for a vocal mic)?

Before you say it's the wrong post... let's think about this...
"Hit her in the head with a maglite (Compressor), gag her (Noise Gate) and throw her in the trunk (limiter).
I'd say you're right on topic!
