what about these ones

I like the fact that they hook up directly with usb and you can record multi track right on your computer.
or you can use in a live settign if the need arises.
any thoughts.

No experience with them but bear in mind that they only feed the stereo mix through USB, not all 8/12 channels.

do you really need to go USB? If not, I recommend any of the Behringer Euroracks. Easy to use, and not too hard on the wallet, either.

You can add USB to a Behringer or any other mixer for $30 with a Griffin iMic. (I currently use the iMic with a Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro.)

it says
_ 16-bit stereo simultaneous inputs and outputs over USB
Hmmm I am going to check it out today. That is a great point, thanks Craig. I just assumed I could record the tracks separately. That was the big selling point. Before I got that impression, I was sold on Behringer . I used to use one of their boards and loved it.

I was looking at the MultiMix 8. Nice piece of gear with some nice options but I eventually went with a Yamaha 10/2. I don't remember if the Alesis had phantom power on it or not. That was my biggest issue. That and cash. Didn't want to dump a ton of money but wanted something decent that I could use for more than podcasting. The Yamaha ran me $100 and I've been really happy with it.
If you go with the Alesis I'd love to hear about it. I own an Alesis 3630 compressor/limiter which I love for recording acoustic guitar. They make good, affordable audio equipment.

wow, again thanks to Craig, I was sold on that mixer and probaly woudl have been siting here trying to figure out what the heck was going on.
Stoped by the store today, the usb is single input output only. Owell back to the original plan with the exception of the Yamaha mixer now, seems like a good choice.

Here's some questions for ya.
What kind of mics will you be using?
Will you need to plug in more than one mic?
Will you be playing music from a different source than your computer?
What type of computer? Mac or PC?
... For the money, you just can't beat Behringer. Their preamps are very good, quiet, and just work. Nothing fancy, however, especially at the lower end.
What I do is mix everything except music off the computer and then bring a stereo mix into my line-in on my computer. I then record on the computer and select "stereo mix" in my audio properties and it just catches any sound that goes through the sound card.

I'll just throw in another vote for the Behringer Euroracks. I use the UB1202 and am very happy with it for only $80.
You can't do multitrack recordings with it, but it works fine for everything else.
