it's official!!! podcasting as we know it is now dead, so all you free-thinking individuals now please move aside and let in the drone-clone-zombie-corporate-money-hounds to feast on the rotting corpse of what could have been an interesting new media form.
Will the last person with a human soul and conscience please turn out the lights and shut the door on your way out of the building as it falls to the forces of the empire.

You seem a little worked up. . .
Many people are not happy with credit and an adoring audience. It is bred intous that as soon as we do something that gets a little popular we have to sqeeze it for every dime it's worth. After all. . .that is the 'American Dream" ;)
Just as you said in your first post concerning podshow. So there is no surprise. People are not content with contributing to thiings and getting props for it. Even in many Open Source project I have worked with. The people see others making money from the same technology and feel they are due. So they make a spin off company to do XY and Z etc etc
Once you start getting paid to do your hobby it becomes work. Is how I look at it.
So if people want to make something like podcasting that they enjoy into work that is their call. . .

Interesting. I see it like this: Hobbies are good, but getting paid for them is better. Most people have a job. I do what I love.
To each his own,

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
Podcasting is not dead. If your favorite shows go off the air, greenman, it's THEIR fault for quitting.
Spare us your eulogy, please.

For once Ian, I completely agree with you.
The press is clamoring over this, and yet Podcasting is in it's infancy.
We are barely established as a new form of media, not even a glimmer in the public eye.
And yet, I continue to attract new listeners simply by word of mouth. Independent record labels express enthusiasm at me playing their music. Unsigned bands go so far as offering to distribute Insomnia Radio fliers at their shows just for being played.
If I decide at some point to go commercial with my show and make some money as compensation for the roughly 20 hours a week I put into this, that is certainly my call. But I won't bombard you with ads every 10 minutes, nor will I charge YOU the listener to download my show.
Everybody wins here. I think your claim is really unfounded....

Thank goodness there is someone else that agrees that this is really win-win. Life is win-win, even in competition. In fact, the only way a situation can become win-lose or lose-lose is when government gets involved.
For once Ian, I completely agree with you.
It's okay, there's a 12-step program.

Greenman-
The podcast is dead? Corporate/commercial this and that?
What exactly prompted this rant? Is it something the rest of us should know about? Please inform us.

Well that was a fun month in my life, I'm glad that's it is over. Maybe I can get back to sleeping on weeknights. Since 'casting is dead, any one want to go to Applebee’s for a wake?
Yeah, everyone has the sky is falling shock at one point, but then it's gut check time. Just because you are not doing as well as some of the other shows, are you going to quit? Oh hey, some folks are bringing produced radio to the format, you are just going to give up, and go home? For some reason, this medium isn't underground enough for your liking; you feel that it's selling out?
In every community a little competition is a good thing. It pushes people to do more, and do it better. At least it does for me. Will I be as good as some with an Audioblog? No, because let's face it, my life not that exciting, but I do have listeners. I try to give the end user the best quality show that I can, and if I lose listens so be it, but I'm sure that I will always have listeners also. If it does hit zero, and my bandwidth doesn't move. Meh, I'm having fun anyway.
As for getting paid for a hobby, I'll be honest, I'm being paid for two of mine growing up, Computers and Airplanes. Now if I can put three hobbies together into one, then I think I will have the trifecta, and stop for a while.

I used to have a computers/airplanes job. Now its just the stupid computers.

Podcasting is bubbling along nicely from what I hear. As long as I get e-mails from Indiana, USA telling me that my show is the only way they get to hear independent music from the UK then I'll be podcasting for as long as I can. :)
Everyone just thinks the novelty's worn off as we live in a world where people are consistently looking for the next best thing. I'll keep saying it but we've merely SCRATCHED the surface in terms of total audience size. I've always said that 'ease of use' is the key to this medium and there are some interesting developments happening in that area (www.odeo.com).

I agree. We're just getting started. I think we'll look back a year from now and be blown away by the increases in listenership we'll see in the coming year.

Podcasting is so easy, there is no way it will just drop off the map. Unlike public access television where it takes a little more than the average person to put together a show, it’s just so easy.
Easy to make a show
Easy to get a show
I don't even listen to the radio anymore. I hate all the ads. I don't mind listing to a quick plug for a sponsor but when its 6 min of back to back ads its too much.
So long as we are putting out good content. People will continue to listen.
But here is a question; will sites like podcast alley list commercial shows the same as they currently do? It should be easy for a listener to know what shows are going to inundate them with advertising.

Hum, such a funny person, must have some paranoid issues. Probably did not listen to enough Black Sabbath in his childhood.
If anything this is the way to take down the music monster , mind controlling machine. And allow all of us to truly create in an affordable medium.

thumper369 - The great thing about podcasting is that it's easy and anyone can do it
And the WORST thing about podcasting is that it's easy and anyone can do it.
It makes it too easy for rank amateurs to get in front of a microphone and go "uuummmm, uuuhhhh, duuuude" and blather on about utter nonsense for 10 minutes straight and talk to their friend sitting next to them about something that only they have any idea of what it is.
People will not sit there and listen unless the story has a clear point and doesn't drag on forever.

I completely agree Tim. Only professionals, licensened and regulated should be able to easily create and share creative content.

Maybe, but no one is forcing you to listen to them, are they?

thats the beauty, you don't have to listen, if you listen and don't like it, don't listen to it anymore...there are enough podcasts to suit anyone's taste...
