which mic for the i-river

I'm thinking about purchasing the iriver 799 but am unsure which mic to go with. I've seen a lot of back and forth about some mics working, some not, and wondered if there were any "expert" opinions out there.

Seem that SOME iRiver 7-series units have had some faulty wiring in them. I've heard that sometimes the issue is more returning and replacing the unit when the mics don't work.

As for which mic to use?

I've used the Audio Technica 831 before, seems to work pretty well.
