View Full Version : a new way to do shownotes....

I just got an ipod and I have been listening to podcast since november. but when I got the ipod, I found a program called ipod agent that lets you sync the ipod up and it will put rss feeds, weather, horoscopes, etc. in the notes section of your ipod. So I was thinking, people who do podcasts should make another "blog" and give people the link to the rss feed. So then the podcaster puts ONLY the shownotes on this blog and uses his original blog for the mp3. The listener (if they have an ipod) puts the rss feed into ipod agent and syncs it whenever he leaves. Then he will find a podcast on his mp3 player, goto the notes and find the right blog post (use dates to make it easy to find shownotes) and there you have it. AND....if you listen to the podcast on your computer, you use the same rss feed (the shownotes feed) and put that in your rss reader to get the shownotes. What do you podcasters think of this? This is just a thought that I threw out there, and I just tested it. I used the http://mab631.blogspot.com/ (not my podcast, just one of my faves) and I made another blog, with its rss feed right here- http://feeds.feedburner.com/testmab631 I only put the shownotes for the 3.7.2005 podcast in the feed, but it does work. thanks for reading.

EDIT: here is the link to ipod agent- http://www.ipodsoft.com/softwaredetail.aspx?sid=1

Want to know another cool thing you can do with notes? Launch a track on the iPod! If you combined the two you might be onto something. The code looks like this.

Link Text (song=Love Rollercoaster)

I would be totally into using my RSS as my show notes... and i guess with a little work they could be.

A full listing of the iPods hidden secrets can be found on Apple's website http://developer.apple.com/hardware/ipod/ipodnotereader.pdf

Could be used to create a very cool interactive experience!

Cheers from the Tree!

OMFG. that is amazing. I just typed that in notepad with a song title, and it works awesome. This just made this idea even better. thanks for replying....wow, i am still amazed.

UPDATE: I've got some kinda bad news. I made a .txt file with that piece of code in it, it did work. Then I tried to put that code into a blog post and then published the post. It doesn't work. It doesn't show up as a link when it is on the iPod. I had to go into the .txt file on the ipod and change it so it was a link, and it worked then. But there is no way that people would do that for every podcast they listen to. any suggestions anyone? thanks.....

UPDATE V2.0: I have been trying this for the past 45-60 minutes and cannot figure it out. I tried the code with with "song" and also with "ipod:music?song" and neither of them would work. If anyone can get this to work, it would be great. The problem the first time was that I had feedburner set to the summary thing, so it stripped out all of the links. It still will not work thought. Anyways, off to get some sleep, got school in the morning.

I saw your post the other day and i've been playing putting this functionality into my podcasting client - RSSRadio (http://www.dorada.co.uk).

It works pretty well. The only realistic way to do this is to have people write it direct into the aggregator software i think.

Are we rebels for not doing shownotes? I just can never seem to get into the whole shownotes concept--I hate reading them and I definately hate writing them. Can I get a Hell Yea?

We just base the show notes off of our outline for the show. Since we are not in the same place, we collaborate on the show notes for the week preceding our show using a wiki setup. Then after the show we just copy and paste the outline into the show notes and clean it up a little bit. It's mainly for people to access the links to websites we mention during the show.

Mr. X,

You're podcast contains so much information and commentary with such amazing people that it's really almost impossible for anyone to actually wrap their minds around shownotes of it. You may be the exception, but I think for the rest of us, show notes are a nice thing to offer our listeners. :-)
