movie audio clips?

hi, i have been lurking for a while and finally decided to post! anyway, i was wondering if anyone knows if it is ok to use short audio clips from movies in a podcast? is there a special license required to do this? is there a limit on how long the clips can be?

I've sampled some Tv shows and stuff on my show. Unless you are playing the entire show, I don't know why it should be a problem.
Dunno for sure, though.

There is so much confusion on the Web as to what is and isn't allowed as far as "fair use" is concerned that your safest bet, aside from not using any copyrighted material at all, is to keep the total of all your clips to under 30 seconds as long as your podcast is non-profit. (If you're sponsored in any way you''re in trouble no matter how long the clips are.) Even though there is no 30 second law in the fair use law itself that I've seen, it seems to have been adopted by universities to such a degree that you could reasonable claim that you thought you were doing the right thing, in which case the worst that's going to happen to you (assuming a judge believes you) is that you're going to be asked to pull all your shows off the web.

Bear in mind that I'm not a lawyer and you should consult one before following my advice. I'm just reporting back on what my own research has turned up. Proceed with caution...if I AM wrong the potential fine is $150,000 per infraction.

i figured this would be sticky. do you think it would make a difference if the clip were part of a sermon that was given at a church? my friend used a clip from paul newman's "cool hand luke" and based his sermon around a clip from it. all i wanted to do is post it in its entirety but didn't want to step on any toes.
