Hi.
My name's Grant and I am one of the creators of The Radio Adventures Of Dr. Floyd.
Late last year (just before we started podcasting), Dr. Floyd was getting pretty popular on my radio show, so I decided i should get a dedicated website for it. I use hostbaby.com for my band's website, so I figured I'd get the smae service for Dr. Floyd.
hostbaby.com is $200 a year and they don't really say much about bandwitdh limits. You can pay $20 a month as well, but you save if you pay a full year of course.
Anyway, Dougg and I look at ways to raise the $200 and decided the way that would be a lot of fun is having a good old fashioned "public radio" style pledge drive.
We created different levels of sponsor ship. I don't remember exactly how they broke down but it was something like this:
$5 - thank you on doctorlfoyd.com & Dr. Floyd Institute Of Technology Student ID Car (Just little business cards I printed up on those Avery Labels)
$15 - All the $5 stuff + a CD of Season 1
$25 - All the $5 & $15 Stuff plus your name mentioned in an episode of the show.
$50 - All the previous level stuff (Except the name mention) + a walk on voice over part on the show.
Most of the pledges were $15 ones but we had one $25 and one $50 and we raised the $200 needed in only 1 hour. Actually we wound up with like $250.
It was really easy, really simple, didn't cost us much of anything (blank CDs and blank business cards) and we were set for a year. We will definitely be doing another of these in the fall. Though we may do one in the summer to help us get a booth at the expo.
Since our format tries to follow that of Old Time Radio, we're now looking into having the Dr. Floyd Secret Society, with a decoder ring (like in A Christmas Story) or something. People could join for a year (say $20 a year, just a starting point, may not be the price) and get A certificate, decoder ring, coloring book, button, etc. We haven't worked out all the details but we're working on it.
T-Shirts are definitely coming too as soon as we get the artwork done as are buttons from busybeaver.net. Check them out if you need buttons, they ROCK!
I would also be open to doing advertisements on the show in the format of Old Time Radio. "The Radio Adventures Of Dr. Floyd, brought to you by Kelloggs!" (or whoever). Our show is very family friendly, so the products we would endorse would have to be too. But we'd be open to that kind of thing.
Anyway, that's the kind of stuff we're looking at. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
