Here's something I've been wondering lately.
Does anyone know how you can do the whole "call in" thing like they do on the radio? Obviously the phone line would have to be connected somehow to your computer, but past that, I have no idea what equipment would be needed or anything like that.

Actually, I figured out how you could have people over the phone (not call in though) added into your podcast!
1) Get an account on audioblogger.com
2) setup a three-way call with audioblogger and the person you want on your show.
3) talk about whatever
4) download the MP3 file from audioblogger.com
4) Use audacity or some other editor to mix that into your show.
5) POST TO YOUR SITE!
And the thing is, the audio quality on audioblogger is surprisingly good, so it's not like you have to worry about crappy sound.
I'm pretty jazzed about this.

I asked for advice on doing phone interviews from a radio friend of mine and it seems that this would work for call-in as well. First, she recommends using an older phone because newer ones have terrible sound. So, Ebay. Circa late 80's. In the very least, don't use a cordless phone of any type. Then you need a piece of hardware called "That" by J. K. Audio. Run a phone cord from the phone to "That" and from "That", run the cable to the computer mic jack.
Here's some other websites she gave me but I haven't checked them out yet:
transom.org, airmedia.org, radiocollege.org.
BTW, because I didn't want to invest in that set-up yet, I do this: I do interviews with folks around the world every week, using a regular headset (not USB), plugged into the appropriate jacks in my laptop. I've also done it with a stand mic and headphones. I set the mic and wave-in and volume settings on Windows quite low (otherwise the other person gets terrible feedback). Call with Skype Out to a landline. Press record. While my guest is speaking, I also mute the mic through Windows volume control. Otherwise when I'm using a headset, you get my breathing.

If you want to use hardware, check out the 2/7 edition of my Behind the Scenes (http://bts.godcast.org) podcast.

I run a website called: www.showbite.com where users call in (via 1-866-SHOWBITE number) regarding any radio or tv program and their recording is posted on showbite.com where other users can vote on their voice statement and respond via another call (thus have a debate).
If you are interested I can provide more detail/describe integeration points.
