Although I have not yet used skype in any of my podcasts, I have been able to figure out how to do it easily and at no cost.
First off, the "stereo mix" solution, did work for me. I'll elaborate on my trouble, I know that some people have had different problems than I have.
1. You don't need to have skype to make this work. You can test it by simply playing an mp3 file or wav file in the background while you talk over the mic. If you can get audacity to record both the mic and the mp3 file, you've got it figured out.
2. Make sure within audacity under the preferences section you have input set to the proper sound card so that you can select to record in stereo.
3. Make sure that on the main screen of audacity you've selected to record with stereo mix.
4. In you control panel sounds and audio devices double check that you're recording with stereo selected.
5. Here's where I'd messed up. For some reason, my mic was set to mute on "playback" in my windows sound properties setting. I was able to record the person talking, but not myself. Keep double checking, messing around with these settings.
After about 45 minutes of messing around with these settings, I was able to fix it.
