If you have been following the forums on Yahoo, you probably know that we will be giving podcasters the opportunity to make some money with ads in their podcasts.

Let me start by saying that this is optional, and *not* activated by default. You can be listed on our site, and not have ads played, it's entirely up to you. There have been some misconceptions out there about what we are planning to do. In any case, it will work something like google ads for audio. When you sign up to have your podcast listed at podcastmania.com, and you request that we play advertising on your show, we will insert a single 20-30 second ad at the beginning or end of your show. Since we are a streaming service, we can determine that the ad was successfully delivered to the listener, and then pay the podcaster a commision (usually like a nickle or something) if you get 1000 plays over the course of the month, it adds up to like $50. You won't get rich, but it's something at least, and you didn't have to go out and get your own sponsors, edit in the ads etc.

But even if you don't like the idea of ads in your podcast, I think you will find some cool stuff out there, and you may like to get listed, so cruise on out, and give us a try at www.podcastmania.com

I still don't get why so many people are getting bent out of shape over what you are doing.

I mean I knew you'd be using my bandwidth and that you'd be putting a little plug in front of the show. It's all good with me.

Let me know when you start doing the ads. I'm interested in hearing more

I continue to not be 100% sure, so I will ask outright: is there any chance whatsoever that my podcast will turn up on podcastmania, ads or no ads, without me having explcitly personally okayed it?

I can't speak for everyone else, but I know in my case I got an e-mail saying "hey I want to add you to podcastmania" and then it explained what it was and how it worked. It was really laid back and said that if I didn't want to that was cool.

I figured why not.

I haven't heard of anyone being added against their will. I sure hope it stays that way.

As long as people are being asked I feel it is cool. It also allows people to get money from podcasts while keeping the programs on our sites clean. Wish I would have thought of it.

Random,
There is no chance of that. There are 2 out there, Adam and Daves that are really there just for my convenience, I've emailed both of them, and never gotten a response, but they will NEVER have ads placed on either side of their shows. And if I ever hear from them that they don't want to be on the list, they're gone.

The site is by invitation only. Either you're there because I liked your show, or someone suggested it to me and I cleared it with you after reviewing it for technical quality (recording, download speed, regularity of publishing, and history) I try really hard not to editorialize, or judge on content....that's not my place.

So I hope that answers your question. If I don't talk to you, and you don't ok it very specifically....you're not in.

hank,
I just listened to Adam Curry's podcast through your site and there was an ad at the beginning for your web site. Did you finally hear back from him and get cleared to bumper his show with ads?

The bumper at the beginning of the stream that says "thank you for listening to your favorite podcasts at podcastmania.com" is hardly an ad. An ad would be something that someone has paid me to place into the stream and I have made some cash from. A bumper simply identifies the site as podcastmania, and...god forbid, I get to thank people for using my service. It is my site after all.

The idea of not placing ads in the stream w/o permission is so that nobody is getting cheated out of potential revenues that would be making by placing paid ads in the stream w/o their prior consent.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see that as an ad.
Thanks for pointing it out though.
