Just wondering if anybody else is having the same issues...

my set up is:

mxl990 mic
m-audio mobilepre USB interface
behringer eurorack UB 1202
G4 Titanium w/ OSX.3.7
Audacity
Soundbed
Line-In
SoundByte
iTunes

when i use audacity with the m-audio going straight in the sound is great. but when i run Line-in the sound gets a lot of high end in it and it kind of sounds like i'm using a comb and wax paper for a pop filter.

has anyone had this problem? any solution?

thanks!

Oh, OK...I misunderstood the question. I thought you were saying that when you used line-in instead of the M-Audio that the quality was terrible compared to the M-Audio.

In the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, launch Audio MIDI Setup. Select the M-Audio in the "Properties for" combo box and check the Format settings for Audio Input and Audio Output. Make sure both are set to 44100.0Hz 2ch-16bit or higher. For some reason I've found that some apps have been messing with those lately (especially Skype).

What is it that you're bringing in through line-in?

ok cool i'll check that and see if that helps.

What is it that you're bringing in through line-in?

i'm trying to run my m-audio input (mics through mixer), iTunes, and soundbyte for bumpers and what not. i'm getting by adding songs and id's etc post production but it'd be a helluva lot more fun to do it live.

thanks for the help!

V-Youth:

I'm not quite understanding how you have your signal chain set up. Are you aware that you have *two* microphone preamps in line there and they may not be playing nicely together? Both your Berry board and your M-Audio device have their own pre-amps. Overall, I'm thinking you probably have your signal path incorrectly wired from the sound of things.

If you're still having trouble by the time you read this, a little more info on how you've got everything connected together (and in what order) would sure help the "diagnostics from a distance."

Best regards,

Tio Ed

the issue predates me adding the eurorack to the set up. the eurorack is there because we have multiple hosts on our show and we need to be able to run all the mics into my powerbook. we use the phantom power from the eurorack and not on the m-audio device. the m-audio device simply acts as the thing that allows the signal to run into the powerbook as the powerbook doesn't otherwise have a line-in (not to be confused with the program) or mic input. there is no competition there and really doesn't reflect the sound issue with line-in anyway.

here's a lo-fi diagram for you of the set up.

mxl990 mics -> eurorackub1202 -> m-audio mobile preUSB -> powerbookG4 (titanium)

I'm still confused...based on what you're saying everything appears to be coming in through the USB. What is coming in through the line in?

What is coming in through the line in?

no, line-in is a program running on my machine (again, not to be confused with a line-in input). line-in is a program that allows multiple programs on a mac communicate with one another and record simultaneously. so for instance, i am trying to record in Audacity the information coming from the mics, some songs off of iTunes, and then some bumpers, showids etc from soundbyte. the program line-in is supposed to facilitate this, but what i'm finding is that the sound coming in from the mics is degraded when line-in (the program) is used. if i just record the mics in Audactiy the sound is excellent, but then i have to add in songs, bumpers, etc in post and i'd rather do this live.

does taht make more sense?

Hmmmm....I'm in the PC world, so I'm not familiar with any program called "line in" - sorry for the confusion and best of luck to you.

OK, now I understand. So you're using LineIn with Soundflower, Soundbed, and Audio Hijack? Did you check the settings in Audio MIDI Setup like I suggested?

Try changing them to 44100.0/2ch-16bit (for your breakout box in/out) and see what happens.

Have you tried giving the computer a good open-hand slap?

Have you tried giving the computer a good open-hand slap?

oh, i'm sorry, i thought it was implied that that was actuallly my first attempt at fixing this dumb thing. :)

I hate to admit it, but I'm at a lost at this point. My next step would be to contact Rogue Amoeba's support (for LineIn).

After reading some of the posts it sounds like a setting issue in Line-In. I have zero knowledge of the program but reading that sound is fine without Line-In and then turns crappy after running it to Line-In, it really smacks of a setting somewhere.

I use a speakerphone and a Radio Shack ambient mic (it's a flat unit you place on the desk and it picks up the room it's in).
