View Full Version : Need a good podcast promo channel!

I've been getting a little frustrated trying to check out the new podcasts which are being generated every day. I have proposal for someone who's up to the task.
Create a podcast channel which is solely dedicated to promos for new podcasts. Promos would be limited to, say, 5 minutes - that way you can get a taste of what the podcast really sounds like, but not 30 minutes of content. Support it with a blog which captures all the pertinent details on how to get more information and sign up.
Promos for any podcast would be limited to one a month, to keep people from using it as the distribution channel for their content. That's the trouble with openpodcast - it's a mixture of all kinds of random things, with highly variable quality and value.
The other key would be to charge the submitter, say, $5 to do the post. That would keep it to people who are serious about their podcasts, discourage abuse, but not be so expensive as to deter people who are dedicated.
Anybody up to it?

Wait a minute - You're suggesting making money from podcasting?? Aren't podcasting & money mutually exclusive??? :D
Seriously though , it's a good idea!

Well, $5 ain't gonna make you rich, it's just the easiest way I could think to make sure the channel is used for its intended purpose. If someone wants to spend that much to upload crap, I suppose they can, but they're not going to do it too many times.
Free services are great but you sometimes get what you pay for!

i personally like the idea. i think promos or trailers for podcasts are a great idea....we actually talked about this a bit in a different spot... here (http://www.podcastalley.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=151&start=30).
although your thoughts are a bit different then what we were really chatting about, about think it is a great idea. isnt this kind of what www.openpodcast.org is doing though?

Well, there's a few things that can be a problem with openpodcast.org:
* Some people use it as their sole distribution - and if you're not interested in the sound of the day, this is just noise.
* There's no barrier to people using it for playing around - witness the recent spate of IP Relay jokes.
* People aren't sure how to advertise their podcasts on it - sometimes it's 20 seconds where you have to scribble the URL down by hand. Sometimes it's a full 30 minute show.
I've been looking around for interesting podcasts, but it's an awful lot of work to cruise all the websites. Honestly, I've found most of my 'casts because they were referenced by other shows. Not very reliable, that's driven by popularity more than what's really great content.

I really can't stand openpodcast. It's just audio clutter most of the time.

the guy at http://www.podcast411.com sort of does this, but not really what you're talking about.
He interviews podcasters. He interviewed me, and I think he has a great idea. He's also working hard on it, and doesn't seem to be slowing down.

I'm very much into all the ideas that help listeners sort through the masses of shows out there. Another nice thing would be a decent podcast reviewer(s) who gives solid details. Different reviewers would be trusted by different audiences. And then as with movies, some folks would decide whether to see it based on how the NYTimes or Entertainment Weekly reviewed it.
Hilary at Http://www.podcrawl.blogspot.org already is doing this, and I love her taste -- and not because she keeps plugging my show -- but I imagine listeners with different styles would want their own reviewers. I have listened to a lot of shows I might not have otherwise because Hilary discussed them.

I have actually been working on something similar to what you are suggesting. The difference although small being that along with the sampler of podcasts there would be a streaming channel with the same podcasts so people can just listen to the channel and hear a lot of different ones. Then reference the site for where to find it, frequency of shows, ratings, and reviews. Since a lot of people would rather not go to the trouble of donwloading something they might not like.
It would also be catagorized by general topic, edited/non-edited, etc. Could use some suggestions for catagories actually. :)

I made a post in the other forum about GigaDial (http://www.gigadial.net). I came across it and it is pretty much what you are looking for. Just read the "learn more" link and see. . .
