this is my first post and i've yet to post my podcasts on my site (should be done later this week), but hello! you'll probably hear more from me in the future.

i found a great microphone at a great deal. the mic has been discontiued so i think you can only get it at musiciansfriend anymore. they have it for an incredible $60 including shock protector and carrying case. they also have mic cables for $3 and mic stands for $5. this, imho, is a great way to get things rolling for a podcast.

Good to hear... I've seen several others who use this mic, and was looking to acquire one myself. The local shop doesn't have it separately, though they do have it in combo with the 991 (?) for $99. I may have to give that package a try.

If anyone lives near a Guitar Center, they have a package deal where you get a MXL990 and MXL991 with basic mounting gear in a plastic holder with fitted foam interior for $99.

Just picked up a set last night and they are really nice mics. Might go pick up another set at that price.

If you're going to spend $99 you might also want to look at the Audio-Technica AT2020...it was specifically designed for home studio use, is a step up from the MXL-990 and has received excellent reviews:

Nice looking mic there.

The Marshall mics that have been mentioned here are really nice. I own another Marshall (model # escapes me as I type this) and I've been very pleased with the quality of the mic for the price. It's really a good above entry level mic that doesn't break the bank.

My issue was powering mics. I own one phantom power box but I intend on using three, to four mics here in the future. I was at the same said Guitar Center last night and the rep there showed me the Yamaha MG 10/2 10 channel mixer. It has the ability to connect four mics, all with phantom power. The cost was $99. I couldn't believe it. I was looking at another board that had four mic connections but did not have phantom power and it was running $200 plus. The cost of a single power boxes alone is $50 so the ability to get four mics and then at least two additional channels for inputs plus send and receive ability to take the signal to another external device like a compressor all for $99 was a no-brainer.

Honestly, for the cost, the Yamaha board and the Marshall mics were a great deal and a good entry level setup for anyone looking to do any type of home recording whether it be podcasting or garage band jamming.

I use two of the MXL 990's in my podcast, one for me and one for Cory. My wife uses them for her "reel" radio station. You can listen to the audio at www.audiocollective.net
The only noise we get is from the computer fans. it is super great and sounds amazing. It is a little bright in the super highs but it will make you podcast sound clear and crisp. It gets some super good bass and will make you very happy. It does need a mixer with phantom power but you can get one of those for the same price as the mic.

That's exactly one of two things I don't want coming in through my mic !
