I was going to hit "Post" on this in the "Company in Need of Podcast Ideas" thread, but I didn't want to divert it too far offtopic.

I'll jump in, too...

I've "just recently" gotten into podcasts (the medium's history is so time-compressed, I'm not sure how noobish I am :) ). I'm not sure what the consensus of a "podcast" is, but I'm hoping it stays rather open and inclusive. I'd say it's "web-based audio, made primarily for offline listening".

Even more generally than that, I see it as more of its ethos and its effect than as a given type of content or delivery: Podcasting is the idea of democratized audio on the Internet. Less important to podcasting than the RSS delivery (or any other standard), I think, was the forhead-slap notion of offline radio, and the realization that the conditions had arisen perfectly for everyday-joe "broadcasting".

I'm just hoping that people don't get too caught up in **ML, terminology, and standards-building that they end up constricting the idea and community around it to a constrained circle of ideas.[/i]
