Hey everyone, I want to start a podcast, but only have a g4 powerbook. I tried it once and got this really bad hissing in the background. Figured out it was the fan, any suggestions for still using the built in mic, and removing the hiss somehow, or any good cheap usb mics?

Good mic, goes right into the line-in jack--self-powered, too: Sony Unidirectional Enriched Sound Vocal...Sing your heart out with Sony's F-V620. It's on the Apple Store online or Google it.

Ok, I may just be really dumb, but I can't seem to get the line-in jack to work. I choose the line-in setting and even in the settings it doesn't regester. I have tried the mic on another computer and the mic is fine. Am I missing something else, or could my line-in be broken.

Remember one important thing--you have to have a *self-powered* microphone to use that port--buying one at Radio Shack, even if it works on another, usually won't work on the Mac. Why I suggested either that Sony microphone, or USB, is that they are self-powered. They provide the amplification that the line-in port doesn't. You could also go through a mixer or a breakout box, but you get a little pricey with that...the Sony one is a good choice, and it does just work when you plug it in. My headset mic will not work on my line-in port because it's not self-powered. It does work into my iPod, because the Griffin line-in device provides power for the mic.
