Hey folks, we are looking to add a bunch of new genres to the podcastalley.com directory...and we are looking for some feedback from you to find out your opinions.
In my opinion, the ipodderx and opml directories are to complex and to detailed. If we were to add 10 or so new genres to the site, what should the be?
Christian, Comedy, Talk Show, What? Any and all input needed.

As far as genres go, I think the more you start to list the more people will want. You should try to have a varied amount, yet keep it simple. Because if you don't, someone will want theirs listed specially, then the next person, then the next. . .etc. Keep it simple I think.

I agree totally. Im trying to develop a list to add to what I have now, but a lot of the shows out there aren't really about any one thing...they can pertain to multiple catgegories at the same time...how do we categorize those? Do we just list them in a general category or what? Any and all suggestions welcome.
We have added a couple of new genres: comedy, business, religion/inspiration and update radio to radio/music ... i will continue to listen to more and figure out how they fit in.

Well, I'm getting ready to add our podcast to your site, and I would really like to see either a television or media category. Granted, so far the shows seem to be 70% or so about TV, but other media talk is working its way into the mix.
Right now, there isn't a genre listed that is really a good fit for us.

I have to agree with this; Internet radio broadcasters and listeners were asked to list the genres they wanted added to the Live365.com directory and the list has been expanding steadily for more than a year now. The genre expansion seems to have no limit.
The hard part is deciding which genres are the most important ones to represent; the rest will have to go into a Miscellaneous Genres bin or something.

Great job on the forum!!
How about a "Marketing" Genre? Or How-To?
Just a few suggestions!! Stumbled on to your forum after hearing Drew talk about it on the "Dawn & Drew Show". Keep up the good work!!
Peace,
EJ

What about a genre for Foreign-Language podcasts? I've been searching for podcasts in Spanish... since I have to depend on how the title and description were worded, I'm not sure if I'm finding all of them.
Or -- is it presumptuous/rude to lump all non-English podcasts together?

I quite like the list of categories at podcast.net. I love so much about podcastalley, and it is my favorite podcast directory. However, the categories are, sorry to say, a bit uneven. I mean, one for religion but not food? One for world news but not politics? The "general" category is of course way too huge. I'm surprised there aren't more "lifestyle" categories like food, home, fashion, family -- you know the sort of categories that taditional media (like magazines at the bookstore or TV shows in a cable listing) are broken into.
I also second the idea about dividing casts by language, but I wouldn't call it "foreign" since it's all relative what "foreign" is.
Not that it's my area of interest, but I'm wondering if the tech stuff can be broken down so that you can actually find what you want when you want it as well.
That's my two cents, or three really.

i agree totally, but need to sit down to develop this sub categories...i dont want to get just an obsured amount of categories. im hoping the new version of the site will incorporate a way for you to have a primary and secondary categories your podcast is in.

I'm with bramley - more lifestyle-ish type things - gut don't get too hung up on it - whatever you do won't suit EVERY podcast you have (i.e. you can't win  )
and definitely by language / country of origin

Ferf, can you please switch FTL from "Music/Radio" to "Cultural/Political"? My show, while it is a radio show, does not belong with music shows, and it's not fair for us to be in there at #1.
Thanks!

How about "banter"?
Or better yet, "zippy patter".

Haha! That is the first time my show has been called that! Were you trying to quote someone else?
BTW- Great show, really enjoying it.

Music and Radio definitely need to be separated. Radio might be too vague a category for the talk shows, but it certainly makes no sense for shows that are primarily talk (e.g. the Air America Radio shows) to be in the same category as music shows.
