The 6.5 Questions
1. How long have you been podcasting?
I got involved with Reality Bitchslap in December of '04. CC Chapman was doing a show and I just HAD to get in on it. I've been an audio freak since I was little. You know...the kid who figured out the parents' $10,000,000 stereo.
2. How many shows have you done?
I just did Episode #87 of Extra Super Action Show, which is a historical narrative about Rome. Add about 20 or so Bitchslaps. So, 328.
3. How has your quality/performance changed since your first show?
Some of the stuff I sent to CC was atrocious! It wasn't scripted, but you wouldn't know it by the delivery. At the time I really didn't know what was out there or who was listening. I didn't know about Podcast Alley or any other resources either, so I concentrated on the music side of things.
The first handful of shows were some kind of experiment to find the 8-minute holy grail. I was so focused on getting good music that the talk came secondary. Then, people wanted balance.
4. What podcasts do you listen to and which are your favorites?
I listen to a load of shows, but a few are constants. The Tragically Nameless Podcast has been one that I'll never miss. Bandtrax, Bob and A.J., tartanpodcast, Podcast 411, Jawbone, Keeme, my other new favorite Celebrity Vinyl Heaven....it changes every day.
The thing is, I don't usually subscribe to most since I listen to shows at home here at the studio. So I become a victim of clicking. It's a cool way to find stuff. I like listening to new shows to see what people are coming up with, so sometimes I'll just browse the Random Podcasts part of the Alley.
5. Tell us about your show and who should be listening to it?
My show is for anybody who likes music and is a bit slow on the uptake. If you have a checkered past then your nametag is waiting at the door. More than most fans of Extra Super Action Show have a tendency to bump into things, pillage and plunder, put asunder. It's under 10 minutes, has music, much of it punk [which is under a mighty big umbrella in my book], and a gag or two.
Some people say they skip the music. Some skip the schtick. So that makes about 15 seconds worth of stuff I really have to worry about.
Who should listen? Music fans. Your mom. Kidding. Your sister. Nah, kidding. Your girlfriend!!!!
6. What is your background (especially if relevant to your podcast)?
I did a year in an institution for radio/television broadcasting. Got a 'degree', but never really pursued it because music was more my thing. Did it really just to learn about recording and studio stuff. But it was mostly music.
Then I heard from an old band mate of mine who had graduated from the film department at S.F. State and was down in Hollywood editing. He told me to come check it out, that I might like it and all that, so I did. Got a job as a Grip/Electric on an independent film shooting in East L.A..
Then, once I had the bug I got into post-production, starting as a background sound effects editor ["the one who puts the wind and the cricket and the birdies in the movies, mom"}, recordist [machine-room guy], sound effects editor [all the 'hard' effects....gunshots, door slams...anything seen], and finally Foley Artist [human movement]. Then I moved on to picture editing as an assistant editor working for various movies and T.V.. Then I got out and came back up to San Francisco.
6.5 Is there anything else your listeners should know about you, your show, etc?
Only that it, like all others, is purely a form of entertainment. As long as you are entertained, than I'm okay with that.
