The 6.5 Questions
|
1. How long have you been Podcasting?
SlashdotReview began October 14, 2004. My first net-delivered audio series was called SportWings, a series of 30 minute programs on Powered Parachute Ultralight Aircraft with product interviews, safety tips and RIAA Oldies music on Live365 in 2000 and 2001.
2. How many shows have you done?
Andy: Close to 200, across various podcasts that I do in addition to SDR such as the Christmas Special Series
Annette: About 12 weekend summary shows.
3. How has your quality/performance changed since your first show?
Andy: The show is very close to the original (fortunately or unfortunately). In a daily news podcast format, you can't add as much production value or original content as you'd like. I've tried to remain consistent: hit the highlights within ten minutes, help out a new artist or group, and hope that it's valuable to listeners so that they can follow up on items that interest them. If the music is not to your taste that day - skip to the next podcast. One day you'll hear something you like.
Annette's professional IT background and different generational perspective helps in the selection of items. She tries to help me with the music selection, but judges me hopeless.
Annette: I think I've gotten more comfortable in front of the mic, but I still appreciate the fact that podcasting allows a person to do multiple takes.
4. What podcasts do you listen to and which are your favorites?
Andy: I listen to PodcastBrothers, Area51, WebTalkGuys, Mike's Manic Minute - and as many IT Conversations as I can. My commute to my home office is 14 steps, so I don't get as much listening time as I would like, except when I am on the road mobile.
Annette: Slashdot Review every morning on the way to work. Beyond that, if I have extra listening time I like to branch out to topics other than technology. I'm a vegetarian, and have really enjoyed the podcast from vegan.com. I try to listen to This Week in Science and On the Media, and am always downloading random new shows.
5. Tell us about your show and who should be listening to it?
SlashdotReview is a daily (M-F) ten minute summary of recent items from Slashdot.org, plus a single from Garageband.com track. Sunday evening there is a weekend summary in the same format.
Slashdot is the technology scan of record - not only in the IT world, but in the intersection of technology, business and policy.
If your primary interest is one of the above, Slashdot Review is an ideal way to maintain awareness in the other two.
6. What is your background?
Andy: Radio - broadly defined : Wireless, RF/MW, fiberoptics, telephony, data networking, video, design automation, and radio broadcasting. I started computers toggling in bits in the S100 days. I'm currently involved in consulting, design automation, and RF semiconductor modeling.
Annette: I'm a staff programmer by both training and profession in a university setting in the Washington DC area - working on application database and LAMP projects.
6.5. Is there anything else your listeners should know about you, your show, etc?
Andy: I think it would be fun to do a podcast, but I am too busy with this daily news program.
Annette: I really appreciate the opportunity to participate on Slashdot Review and realize that it's no small task. I'm amazed and pleased Andy makes the time to do it every single day! Now if only someone can figure out a wireless and automatic way to get podcasts to my iPod, my life would be complete.....
